Barbara Jean Butler, 81, of Effingham, KS died on Friday, January 5, 2024, surrounded by family at the Atchison Medicalodge, following a two and a half year fight with Alzheimer’s.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday, Jan. 11th, 2024, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Cormode officiating. Burial will follow in the Pardee Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 10th, 2024, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Barbara was born on Nov. 25th, 1942, in Omaha, NE, the daughter of John A. and Rose Marie (Thomas) Ruberti. She attended Walnut Hill Grade School, graduated from the Cathedral High School in 1960, and attended one year at St. Catherines School of Nursing. Barbara was a very devoted wife. When she met Glenn on Jan. 7, 1961, she knew she had met her soulmate. She had always wanted to marry a cowboy. She was married to Glenn O. Butler in Reno, NV on May 9, 1961. She worked as a farm/dairyman’s wife, as a cartographer for Atchison County, and then as a travel agent for Atchison Travel from 1989 to Jan of 2011 when she retired. Barb was a devoted mother to her children, and helped Glenn farm until they sold the dairy farm in 1981. They had an outstanding dairy and had received many awards for their milk production. Barb was a charter member of both the Atchison County Young Farm Wives, and the Atchison County Home Economics Advisory Board. They received the Kansas Bankers Association Award for Soil Conservation in 2004. She loved reading, painting, sewing, making quilts for the family, and traveling.
Survivors include her husband Glenn O. Butler, of the home in Effingham, KS two sons Thaddeus Butler (Lisa Jantz), Effingham, KS, granddaughter Tiffany (Andrew) Nicholson, three great grandchildren, three step grandchildren, granddaughter Brittany (Jeff) Reinert, two great grandchildren and Glenn O. (Sherry) Butler, Jr, Effingham, KS., grandson Steven G. (Sarah) Butler, and granddaughter Julie (Daniel) Zuniga, a daughter Dawn Marie Maier, Kansas City, KS and grandsons Christopher (Rikki) Clark and Dale (Mariah) Maier and three great grandchildren. Her parents, and sister Roberta A. Nitzel preceded her in death.
