An effort to create a memorial to fallen firefighters began five years ago in St. Joseph.
Today, it took a major step forward with a groundbreaking at Fire Station Number 9 at 3202 Faraon Street.
St. Joseph Fire Inspector Mindy Andrasevits says work toward the memorial began five years ago.
“We hired a local artist and all local crews to build it,” Andrasevits says. “We’ve raised money and we’re still in the process of raising money. But we have a good portion of it now and ready to break ground.”
Andrasevits says organizers expect the memorial to be erected in a few months.
“It will be open to the public once it’s finished and it’s going to be beautiful,” Andrasevits says.
