He attended Cave City High School before continuing his education at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic, helping his father haul milk before embarking on a distinguished military career. In later years, he converted to Catholicism and took his faith seriously, finding great meaning in his spiritual journey.

Music was one of Gary's greatest joys. A talented guitarist, he spent years traveling across the United States sharing his love for music with others. His sense of humor and warm personality made him a beloved presence wherever he went. He also found fulfillment in working with children over the years and took great pride in making a positive impact on young lives.
