NWMSU student shot and killed in hometown of Ferguson

Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville is mourning the death a student shot and killed Tuesday night in his hometown of Ferguson.

Ferguson police report finding 22-year-old Kylan Harrell with a gunshot wound late Tuesday night in the 1500 block of Fir Drive, a residential street near the Dellwood border.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports police took Harrell to a St. Louis area hospital where he was pronounced dead from his wounds. Ferguson police are asking for the public's help in the investigation.

Northwest reports Harrell was a junior organizational communication major.

Harrell served as the president of the University’s Alpha Phi Alpha chapter, was active in the Men’s Minority Organization, and was a student representative for the Black Alumni Chapter of the Northwest Alumni Association. Northwest reports he also was a former student employee in campus recreation.
