St. Joseph city officials will be weighing the best options for spending tens of millions of dollars coming to the city from Washington.

St. Joseph will receive more than $39 million from the American Rescue Plan passed by Congress, the coronavirus relief bill pushed by President Joe Biden.

City Manager Bryan Carter says it is important to spend the money wisely.

“We are in the process of establishing a committee that will hear the requests for funding and then they will make recommendations for the city council and the city council will ultimately issue final determinations on who receives what amount of funding,” Carter says.

The federal money will come in two installments. The first installment could arrive soon, with the second next year.

Carter says his office has been poring over the 150 pages of guidelines on how the money can be spent.
