MIAA cancels remaining spring sports schedules and championships

Posted Mar 17, 2020 4:21 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The MIAA CEO Council voted unanimously to cancel the remaining spring 2020 conference regular-season competition schedule and the 2020 MIAA conference championships due to concerns regarding the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The previous decision by the CEO Council to indefinitely suspend all countable athletically related activities (for all MIAA sports, regardless of season) remains in effect.

The health and well-being of MIAA student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and our communities continues to be the Association's top priority. The MIAA is taking these unprecedented actions to help our campuses and communities continue to address this public health crisis.

St. Joseph School District suspends spring sports indefinitely

The St. Joseph School District leadership team continues to engage in ongoing discussions related to the potential impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on our community in the days and weeks ahead.

Part of that discussion includes the impact on spring sports and activities. This morning, we received word that MSHSAA will be putting out a statement later today on the matter. The City of St. Joseph also signed an emergency declaration today banning gatherings of 50 people or more. Although the declaration provides an exception for “day-to-day operations such as schools,” the district is taking proactive measures to limit the risk to our staff, students and their families. In light of this, we will be suspending all SJSD activities, including spring sports, effective today, March 16, 2020 until further notice.

This scheduling announcement addresses activities and spring sports only at this time. Discussions and decisions related to other areas of impact in our district are still underway. We will send updated communication as soon as we know more.
