MWSU baseball knocks off Rogers State 6-5 for first MIAA victory

ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western Baseball picked up its first conference win of the season on Friday afternoon. The Griffons (6-15, 1-3 MIAA) topped Rogers State (9-8, 0-4 MIAA) 6-5 in game one of a three-game series with the Hillcats.

Rogers State scored first with a single run in the second inning. The Griffons would answer, however, scoring three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. The Hillcats would follow with four runs on four hits and an error in the sixth to re-take the lead 5-3. MWSU sealed the game following this offensive output with three runs to round out the final score 6-5.

Roy Robles got the start on the mound for the Griffons. Robles pitched five of nine innings, striking out four batters on the day. Justin Wood received his second victory of the season in relief of Robles. The freshman pitched two innings, striking out two Hillcats and only allowed one hit. Brian Tan also got his second save of the year as he closed the ball game.

NOTABLES:

- The Griffons out-hit the Hillcats 9-7 in game one. Andrew Meier and Zach Hanlan each added two hits, while Reid Briney, Nolan Meyer, Zach Pych and Chas Verduzco each had a single hit.

- Meier and Pych each tallied two RBIs in Friday's contest, while Hanlan and Meyer each added one.

- Zach Hanlan added his third game with more than one hit this season and tallied his hit total to 10 in 2020.

- Nolan Meyer's hit on the game was also his first double of the season, scoring Hanlan in the fifth inning of the ball game.

The Griffons return to the Spring Sports Complex to take on the Hillcats in game two on Saturday at 1 p.m.
