The Central girls basketball team won its first district championship since 2016 as the Indians beat Staley 35-31 in the Class 5 District 16 title game.
Central fell behind early in the second quarter, but they used an 8-1 run to take the lead for good. The Indians led 16-15 at halftime and Staley tied the game twice in the second half but never took the lead.
CHS junior Lauren Eiman and sophomore Ella Moody scored all 19 second half points for the Indians. Eiman finished the game with 14 points and Moody added 13.
Central, who is now 16-11 this season, advances to the Class 5 Sectionals on Wednesday as they'll play Liberty (26-0) at 6:30 inside Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence. Liberty beat the Indians twice this season, 31-25 at Liberty and 54-48 at Central.
