Missouri Western baseball splits doubleheader at Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – The Missouri Western baseball team split a doubleheader at Quincy on Tuesday as they won the opener 7-3 before falling in game two 7-2.

The Griffons are now 5-15 this season, while Quincy is 8-3.

GAME ONE:

- The Griffons scored first with a solo home run by Ben Tsui in the first inning. Tsui would return to home plate in the fourth and add a second home run to drive in Alex Crouch and Chas Verduzco to make the lead 4-0. From then on, it was all Missouri Western as they never surrendered the lead.

- Jacob Cooper received his first win of the season on Tuesday afternoon. The senior struck out six batters and only allowed three runs in the six innings he pitched.

- Ben Tsui led the Griffons offensively as he hit two home runs with 5 RBIs.

- Tsui leads all Griffons in homers this season with four in 2020.

- The Griffons out-hit the Hawks 12-7 in the first contest. Andrew Meier led the way with three hits, while six other Griffons tallied at least one hit.

- The Griffons stranded eight batters in game one, including six in the last three innings of play.

GAME TWO:

- Quincy got on top of the Griffons early in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Hawks never gave up their lead following the gain of that lead.

- Brian Tan took the loss in game two. Although he struck out two batters in 2.2 innings pitched, Tan allowed four runs and four hits.

- The Griffon offense tallied six hits throughout game two. Ben Tsui, Colby Tam, Andrew Meier, Alex Crouch, Chas Verduzco and Jack Hazlett each had a single hit.

- The Quincy pitching staff stranded eight Griffons throughout game two, stranding Zach Hanlan four times throughout the ball game.

UP NEXT:

Missouri Western returns to Griffon Baseball Field on Mar. 6 to host MIAA opponent Rogers State for a three-game series.
