MWSU softball lets two leads slip away in losses to Sioux Falls & Wayne State

TOPEKA, Kan. - Three-run rallies by Sioux Falls and Wayne State (Neb.) against Griffon Softball on Sunday, left Missouri Western with two losses on its final day of the Emporia State 5-State Classic in Topeka.

Sioux Falls scored three in the fifth of the first game of the day to take down the Griffons, 3-2. Wayne State scored three in the top of the sixth and held on for a 4-3 win over MWSU.

GAME 1

Sioux Falls 3, MWSU 2

Missouri Western scored twice in the third to take a 2-0 lead that held until Sioux Fall's three-run fifth. Emma Hoffart reached on an error that allowed Rachel Stewart to score the first run of the day. The Griffs kept the inning going and Sydni Hawkins put MWSU up 2-0 with an RBI single that pushed Hoffart home.

Sioux Falls led off the fifth with five straight singles, the last one pushing the third run home. Olivia Goodale took over in the circle for Kelly Uthe with one out in the fifth and retired the first two batters she faced. Goodale stuck out three and walked one with one hit over the final 2.2 innings. Uthe struck out five and walked one, but gave up three earned runs on eight hits. Hawkins had two of MWSU's three hits in the game.

GAME 2

Wayne State 4, MWSU 3

The Griffons led 3-1 after an RBI single by Hoffart in the first and a two-run single by Brea Blanton in the second. Wayne State tied the game at three with a two-run homer to left in the sixth and added a third run in the inning on an RBI single.

The game ended with Griffon runners at second and third. Rian Gere led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to left and Kyle DeHook followed with her second hit of the game. Kalyn Damgaard sacrificed the runners to third with a bunt before Blanton fouled out and Lauren Houston flew out to left to end the game.

Kaili Hinds took the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. Goodale was perfect over 1.1 innings of relief.

UP NEXT

The Griffons play five games in Joplin, Feb. 28 through March 1 in Joplin, Missouri as part of the Teri Mathis-Zenner Memorial Tournament.
