Griffon baseball splits final two games against Minot State

ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western Baseball closed out their first home series of the season on Saturday. The Griffons (4-11) split the doubleheader with Minot State (6-4) 0-11 and 12-7. Although the Griffons started out slow, they finished the series on a high note.

GAME ONE:

- Seven runs on four hits and two Griffon errors in the first inning illustrated an all Minot start to game one.

- Roy Robles (L, 1-1) got the start for the Griffons. Although he struck out three batters, Robles gave up seven runs and four hits through one pitched inning.

- The Griffon pitching staff accumulated seven strikeouts throughout the matchup. Action included four innings from Carson Aycock and two from Chad Smith.

- Missouri Western recorded four hits in the first contest. Josh Robinson tallied two of those hits, while Nolan Meyer and Iasid Bernal added one hit each.

GAME TWO:

Minot started early again offensively taking a 2-1 lead in the first inning. A four-run stretch in the second inning allowed the Griffons to take a 5-2 lead heading into the third inning.

- MSU would not go down easy, however. The Beavers bounced back with four runs from innings three and four to re-take the lead 6-5.

- A seven-run stretch in the fifth and sixth innings fueled the Griffon offense to re-take the lead and finish the game with the win.

- Jack Schmedding came in for relief of Jacob Cooper in the fourth inning. He got his second win on the season, striking out six batters and only allowing one run.

- The Griffons recorded 14 hits in game two. Alex Crouch led the way with four hits, while Andrew Meier, Nolan Meyer and Reid Briney recorded two hits each.

- Meier had a day offensively in the second contest as he recorded two hits, four RBIs and one run in five at-bats.

UP NEXT:

The Griffons will hit the road starting Feb. 28 as they take on MIAA opponent Washburn next Friday.
