MWSU softball goes 1-1 on day one of 5-State Classic in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Missouri Western softball team (2-4) rallied for a win and suffered a close loss on its first day of the Emporia State 5-State Classic in Topeka.

GAME 1

MWSU 7, Concordia-St. Paul 3

Missouri Western rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to snap a three-game skid.

Concordia-St. Paul (2-5) got a run in the first and took a 2-0 lead with another run in the fourth. Kelly Uthe tied the game at two in the fourth with a 2-run double to left center. Uthe put MWSU up 4-2 in the sixth with another double, this one down the lefit field line that drove in Taylor Hoelscher. The Griffons got the go-ahead run in the sixth thanks to a Golden Bear error. A Brea Blanton bunt single put MWSU up 5-2 before Lauren Houston made it 6-2 with a sacrifice fly to left. Rachel Stewart ended the big inning for the Griffs with an RBI-double to left.

Uthe came in relief of Kaili Hinds in the seventh after CSP put its first two batters on courtesy of an error and a single. The Golden Bears scored one more run in the inning, but Uthe got the Griffons out of it before the tying run ever came to the plate.

Stewart went 2 for 3 in the game with an RBI. Uthe was also 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Hinds got her first win of the season, going six innings. She allowed two earned runs, three overall, on six hits. Hinds struck out five and walked one.

GAME 2

Minnesota State 4, MWSU 2

Minnesota State (6-1) took a 4-0 lead after scoring three runs on two hits and two errors in the sixth. The Griffons got a two-out rally going in the seventh. Taylor Hoelscher roped a triple off the centerfield fence that drove in two runs. Uthe represented the tying run with two-out, but struck out to end the game.

Uthe took the loss with one of her four runs allowed, earned. She struck out one, didn't walk any and scattered six hits across her six innings of work.

UP NEXT

Missouri Western goes to Washburn to take on Maryville (8:30) and Minnesota Duluth (10:30) on Saturday.
