Griffon baseball stops skid with 5-4 win over Maryville

JOPLIN, Mo. - Missouri Western Baseball snapped a seven-game losing skid with a victory on Saturday. The Griffons (2-7) topped the Maryville Saints (2-2) 5-4 in day two of the MIAA/GLVC Crossover in Joplin. Saturday's matchup was the first time in Griffon Baseball history that the two programs had played.

The Saints started the game offensively, scoring one run in the second inning to take the lead. The Griffons brought out the bats in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring four runs during that time and never lost the lead for the rest of the game.

Justin Wood got the start for the Griffons, striking out four batters in six innings pitched. Brian Tan came through with the save in relief of Wood, adding four strikeouts and only one hit. Tan's save is the first for 2020 for the Griffons. Ryan Louck took the loss for the Saints, allowing seven hits and four runs in six innings pitched.

NOTABLES:

- Griffon Baseball out-hit the Saints 10-8 throughout the contest. Gustavo Gonzales, Andrew Meier and Zach Hanlan recorded two hits each while Josh Robinson, Troy Davern, Alec McGehee and Colby Tam recorded one hit per Griffon.

- The Griffon defense recorded 27 putouts throughout the matchup. Chas Verduzco pulled in five assists.

- Four Griffons have now recorded above .350 batting averages for 2020: Robinson (.370, Tam (.350, Hanlan (.385) and Meier (.394).

- Meier and Robinson are averaging .400 at the bat when facing right-handed pitchers so far this season as well.

The Griffons will return to Joplin on Sunday to take on McKendree at 4 p.m.
