ARKADELPHIA, Arkansas - The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team overcame a 5-2 deficit and posted a 10-6 triumph at Henderson State University on Friday evening.
Northwest (3-2) found itself trailing early, following a three-run home half of the first inning by Henderson State (0-3).
In the top of the second, the Bearcats scored their first run of the contest, clawing into the Reddies lead after senior first baseman Connor Quick hit a sacrifice fly to center , scoring junior Jacob Pinkerton.
Henderson State answered in the bottom of the second to increase its lead back to three runs over Northwest.
Following a pair of runs scored by both squads in the third and fourth innings, the Bearcat offense came alive at the plate. With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, junior infielder Peter Carlson stepped into the batter's box and ripped a bases-loaded double to left-center scoring Pinkerton, Quick and junior outfielder Matt Gastner.
Following a stalemate sixth inning, Northwest went back to work on the offensive end, notching back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles by Gastner, Carlson and sophomore outfielder Jordan Peck that gave the Bearcats an 8-5 lead.
The Reddies tallied a single run in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the Bearcat advantage to two runs heading into the final two innings.
In the top of the eighth, Quick recorded his second RBI of the game, singling up the middle scoring senior infielder Calvin Rudolph from second base. Adding to the rally, Gastner stepped up to the plate and reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Rudolph on an interference call and increasing Northwest's lead to 10-6.
In the ninth, sophomore Zach Shadlow took the mound for the Bearcats and forced the Reddies into a one-two-three inning to seal the win, 10-6.
On the bump, senior Quintin Van Ackeren got the start for Northwest, facing 19 batters. Van Ackeren dealt four innings pitched, allowing five runs (five earned) on five hits while striking out three. Junior Jonathan McIntyre, senior Ethan Griswold and sophomore Alex Slocum also made appearances. McIntyre was credited with the victory.
The Bearcats continue action in the Henderson State Invitational Feb 8 against Ouachita Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
NOTES: Carlson went 2-for-5 with two hits, four RBI and two doubles … Quick notched three hits and two RBI … five Bearcats notched multi-hit games (Carlson, Quick, Rudolph, Peck, Caden Diel) … Northwest registered a team-best eight doubles in the win.
