MWSU's Roy Robles named MIAA Pitcher of the Week

Posted Feb 06, 2020 4:35 AM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Missouri Western baseball senior pitcher Roy Robles has been named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week after striking out an MWSU-record 17 batters in the first game of the 2020 season last week.

Robles recorded all but one out in his six innings of work via strikeout with 15 of them swinging. Behind that pitching performance, the Griffons won their season opener, 5-3 at Oklahoma Baptist. Robles got the win, pitching six innings and allowing one hit on two runs and five walks. A fly ball for the third out of the second inning was the only ball put in play through Robles' six innings. The senior lefty's perfomrance bested the program's previous single game record of 14 strikeouts, which was accomplished five times by four different players. Robles was one of them, fanning 14 at Ouachita Baptist on Feb. 8, 2019.

The Griffons (1-2) continue the 2020 season Friday when they begin a four-game series at Southern Arkansas.

Griffons ink 55 football student-athletes on national signing day

ST. JOSEPH - Missouri Western State University head football coach Matt Williamson and his staff announced the program's 2020 recruiting class on Wednesday. Fifty-five future Griffs signed their national letter of intent Wednesday to become members of the 2020 Griffon Football team.

Williamson and his staff inked a recruiting class that features a great deal of size and regional influence. Coming off a 9-3 season and back-to-back Agent Barry Live United Bowl Championships, the coaches went well beyond the borders of the Show-Me state to bolster the 2020 roster.

"This is hands down our best class yet," Williamson said. "We took care of all our team needs, and we assembled a whole separate team within this recruiting class. We landed some high caliber athletes and quite a few are turning down Division 1 FCS offers to come play for the Griffons. We also expanded into 14 different states to land our recruits this year.

"Our coaching staff did a phenomenal job on the recruiting trail. We loaded up with a lot of skill players, which was one of our main focuses. Our staff outworked everyone and we will continue to do the same every year. Many successful years to come for Missouri Western Football with this 2020 class!"
