Winter storm to bring snow, sleet, freezing rain; most area schools cancel classes

A winter storm is bearing down on us.

The National Weather Service forecasts this storm to begin with snow, changing into sleet and freezing rain later this morning into the afternoon. The National Weather Service expects freezing rain late this afternoon. The high should be near 33.

The Weather Service expects ice accumulation of less than a tenth of an inch. Snow accumulation could be anywhere from one to three inches.

The threat of winter weather has prompted St. Joseph public and parochial schools to cancel classes today. Many area school districts have called off classes today. Click here for a list of cancellations.

The Weather Service forecasts freezing rain and rain tonight in the area with a low of around 25 degrees with little or no new ice accumulation expected.

On Saturday, there remains a chance of snow and freezing rain in the early morning turning to mostly sunny with a high expected near 30. Winds will be brisk throughout this storm; some gusts will top 30 miles per hour.
