MIAA releases weekly basketball awards

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The third men’s basketball athlete of the week award for the MIAA has been announced. Missouri Southern’s Cam Martin has tabbed with this week’s accolade. 


Cam Martin earned his first athlete of the week award of the season. Martin averaged 24 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 0.5 blocks while shooting 50 percent from the field in a pair of games, including a road win at Upper Iowa. He shot 44 percent from the three-point line and was 75 percent at the free-throw line. In a road game at Truman State, he had 18 points in 20 minutes. Martin followed that up with 30 points and 10 rebounds in the road win at Upper Iowa.


The MIAA announced its third women’s basketball athlete of the week for the 2019-2020 season. Central Missouri’s Morgan Fleming and Central Oklahoma’s Kelsey Johnson were tabbed with this week’s accolade. 


Morgan Fleming was selected as the athlete of the week for the first time this season. Fleming led the Jennies to a 67-58 win over now nationally ranked Union. She scored 19 points for the second straight game, going 5-of-12 from the field and hitting a pair of three-pointers. Fleming was nearly perfect at the free-throw line, going 7-of-8, including four in the final minute to put the game away. She also added five rebounds, two assists, and two steals to her stat line.


Kelsey Johnson picked up her first athlete of the week honor this season. Johnson led UCO to a victory over Cameron in a non-conference home game. She scored a game-high 19 points as the Bronchos set a Hamilton Field House record of 107 points in the victory. Johnson shot 8-for-9 from the floor, making her only 3-point attempt and both of her free-throw attempts. She also had five rebounds with five blocked shots, two assists and one steal in 21 minutes of action.
