Missouri Western women roll past Southwest Baptist 84-63

ST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western women's basketball team (2-1) opened its home season with a dismantling of former MIAA foe Southwest Baptist (1-1) Friday night 84-63.

 

The Griffons led wire-to-wire, leading by as many as 24 points. Four Griffons were in double-figures and two posted double-doubles. Missouri Western out-rebounded the Bearcats by 16 and doubled SBU up in the paint, 44-22.

 

NOTABLES

  • Missouri Western scored its most points against an NCAA DII opponent since dropping 87 on Missouri S&T early in the 2016-17 season.
  • The 21-point margin of victory was the largest against a DII opponents since a 23-point win over Northwest Missouri early last season.
  • The Griffons pulled down 38 rebounds and held SBU to just 22.
  • With 11 offensive rebounds, MWSU scored 20 second-chance points to nine for SBU.
  • Missouri Western shot nearly 56% from the field, 64% from 3-point range and 77% at the free throw line.
  • MWSU shot close to 67% in both the second and fourth quarters, holding SBU to 35% and 39% in the same quarters, respectively.
  • Chris Wilson posted another double-double, her third in as many games as a Griffon with 22 points and 13 rebounds. She also led the team with five assists and three steals while blocking a shot and drawing eight fouls.
  • Corbyn Cunningham tied for fourth in MWSU history with 16 rebounds to go with her 18 points on 7 of 9 shooting and two blocks.
  • Katrina Roenfeldt was 6 of 10 from the field and scored 15 points.
  • Kylee Williams was 3 of 4 from 3-point range and added 11 points.
  • It's early, but after the win, MWSU ranked 2nd in the MIAA with a .494 field goal percentage and 2nd with a .405 3-point percentage.
  • The Griffons ranked 2nd in the MIAA with a +9 rebounding margin after the win.
  • Wilson's scoring average (21) now ranks 2nd in the MIAA and her 12.3 rebounds per game are 3rd most.
  • Cunningham leads the MIAA, shooting better than 61% and ranks 6th at 17.7 points per game and 5th with 10 rebounds per game.
