Bearcats' Hawkins named MIAA men's basketball Player of the Week

Northwest Missouri State University junior Ryan Hawkins has been named the MIAA's men's basketball athlete of the week.


Hawkins (Atlantic, Iowa) was named the MVP of the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic and he set the Northwest single-game scoring record with 44 points.


In four games, Hawkins averaged 27.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.3 steals, while shooting 56.3 percent from the field and 53.6 from three-point range.


Hawkins poured in a Northwest single-game record 44 points against No. 9-ranked Southern Nazarene. Hawkins was 15-of-22 from the field, including 8-of-11 from three-point range in leading the Bearcats to a 100-88 victory over the Crimson Storm.


Hawkins was also Northwest's top scorer vs. No. 22 Daemen with 24 points and vs. MSU Moorhead with 27 points. He posted his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds in a 60-52 triumph over Minnesota-Crookston.


Hawkins made 36-of-64 field goals and was 15-of-28 from three-point range in the four wins. Hawkins was nearly automatic at the free throw line as he sank 24-of-26 (92.3 percent) of his foul shots over the four-game stretch.


The No. 1-ranked Bearcats (4-0 overall) will take on the University of Saint Mary at 6 p.m. Thursday in Bearcat Arena.
