A group seeking to have conversations about the possibility of wind turbines coming to Buchanan County will kick off a campaign Tuesday night.

Friends of Buchanan County is a group that formed after several residents learned wind turbines could potentially come to the county.

Anita Simon with the group says they are not against renewable energy.

“But we’re against it here,” Simon says. “We don’t think it’s a good fit for this county. We have a highly-populated, rural area along with a fairly large urban center and we just have feelings that it could impact this whole county as far as, financially, it could be an economic downturn, ultimately.”

Simon says the group has had meetings and also put together a petition asking County Commissioners to require a one-mile setback of wind power projects from property lines.

“Because we believe that is a fair and reasonable distance to protect us from the ill effects of the wind turbines and there’s many of those that I could list,” Simon says.

Friends of Buchanan County will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for the campaign kick off at Bessie Ellison Elementary School in St. Joseph. Simon adds anyone in Buchanan County is invited to attend.
