No. 1 Northwest Missouri State defeats MSU Moorhead 92-71

ST. JOSEPH, Missouri - The No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team moved to 4-0 and tied the MIAA and school records for consecutive wins at 42 with a 92-71 triumph over MSU Moorhead, 92-71. 


Northwest shot 55.6 percent from the field (30-of-54, including 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from three-point land. Crookston also shot the ball well at 58.5 (31-of-53, but turned the ball over 16 times.

 

The Bearcats drained 24-of-27 free throws, while the Dragons were limited to 4-of-6 at the line.

 

Sophomore Diego Bernard tallied a career-high 24 points as he drained 9-of-14 field goals. Bernard grabbed a team-high tying seven rebounds.

 

Junior Ryan Hawkins led the scoring attack with 27 points. Hawkins made hay at the line as he made all 12 of his free throw attempts. Hawkins also was credited with a team-high tying seven rebounds.

 

Senior Ryan Welty tallied a season-high 17 points as he buried 4-of-5 three-pointers in the Bearcat victory. Welty was a perfect 5-of-5 the charity stripe.

 

Northwest tied the MIAA and school record with its 42nd straight victory. Northwest also won 42 games in a row in 1929-31.

 

Northwest will play its first home game of the season Thursday at 6 p.m. against the University of Saint Mary (Kansas) in Bearcat Arena.

 

NOTES: Northwest has won 35 consecutive games on neutral courts – the longest active streak among all NCAA Div. I, II and III schools … Northwest has won 26 consecutive games in the month of November.
