Northwest soccer gets into MIAA tournament with win over Southern

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team clinched a spot in the MIAA Tournament by shutting out Missouri Southern 4-0 Sunday afternoon at the Bearcat Pitch. This is the first time since 2012 that the Bearcats have clinched a spot in the tournament.


Teagan Blackburn got things going for the Bearcats in the first half by scoring two goals in the first 13 minutes to get an early 2-0 lead. Alex Mausbach assisted on both goals.


Shortly into the second half, Kaylie Rock netted one in to add to the score, 3-0. Blackburn assisted with the goal.


In the 70th minute, Kaitlyn Case took a penalty kick and converted to push the lead to 4-0.


The Bearcats improve to 6-9-3 overall and 4-5-2 in conference play. This concludes regular season play and will mark the third MIAA Tournament appearance for the Bearcats.


The top eight teams qualify for the 2019 MIAA Tournament. The quarterfinals will take place on Fri., Nov. 8. The semifinals and final will take place the following weekend at the home of the highest remaining seed.


Northwest will be the No. 6 seed, however the MIAA will not make an official announcement on the MIAA Tournament bracket until after a make-up game for Fort Hays State and Central Missouri is played on Tuesday

 

NOTES: Northwest has exceeded its goal output from last year. Northwest has tallied 29 goals this season, compared to nine goals in the entire 2018 campaign. Goalkeeper Alexis Serna Castillo notched her third shutout of the season and made seven saves against the Lions. The Bearcats took 23 shots on target and had possession of the ball for 52% of the time. Freshman Kaitlyn Case leads the team with six goals … Teagan Blackburn has five … Izzy Romano, Kaylie Rock and Bri Wawiorka have three goals each … Alex Mausbach, Tanith Beal and Manuela Gonzalez have two goals each. Alex Mausbach leads the team in assists with five.
