Griffons open season with loss to No. 9 Southern Nazarene

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Missouri Western Men's Basketball opened the 2019-20 season with a 96-74 loss to No. 9 Southern Nazarene at Civic Arena in the SCB National Hall of Fame Classic.


The Griffons trailed by six at the half, but SNU scored 56 points in the second half while shooting 54% from the field to run away with the victory. Missouri Western trailed by as many as 30 in the second half. The Griffons used an 11-5 run that saw redshirt freshman Will Eames score seven of those points to cut the deficit to 20, but that was as close as the Griffons could get.


NOTABLES

  • Eames led the team in his first game action at MWSU with 19 points and tied with true freshman Alex John for a team-high seven rebounds.
  • Tyrell Carroll scored 12 on 6-of-10 shooting and had a game-high seven assists.
  • Southern Nazarene scored 20 of its points off 15 Griffon turnovers and had 10 steals.
  • MWSU stayed even with the Crimson Storm in the paint with both teams scoring 36 down low.
  • The Griffons shot 49.2% from the field, and were 7-for-26 from three a 26.9% clip.
  • At the free throw line, the Griffons went 9-of-19 for 47.4%
