Flu season is on its way and the St. Joseph Health Department is offering vaccines.

Clinic Coordinator at the Health Department Stevie Smith says residents are encouraged to get flu shots now as flu season is known to peak at different times of the year.

“Sometimes it can start as early as October, sometimes it can go as late as February or even March,” Smith says. “We want people to remember that the flu shot is not just for you, it’s for other people - those people at high risk for complications, like young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions and elderly folks.”

The city flu clinic will be held from 8:30 to noon on Wednesday at the St. Joseph Rec Center. Smith says there is a drive through option for those with accessibility needs. Residents should bring their insurance card, if available but Smith adds that they do not have to be insured to be vaccinated.

The Health Department downtown accepts people for vaccinations from 8 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Primary care and your local pharmacy also typically offer the flu vaccine.
