KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Jackson County sheriff's deputy has been charged with assault for shooting a woman in the back.

29-year-old Deputy Lauren Michael was charged Wednesday with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

The newspaper reports that the shooting occurred Aug. 8 in Kansas City when Michael tried to stop a man and a woman riding a scooter on the wrong side of the street. The female rider fled. Michael caught up to the woman and shot her in the back.

Michael has said the woman tried to use the deputy's stun gun on her. Investigators question that.

Michael in 2017 fatally shot a shoplifting suspect when she was working off-duty security at a Kansas City-area Walmart. She faces a wrongful death lawsuit related to that shooting.
