Longtime Northwest Missouri State University Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Mel Tjeerdsma has been appointed to the Northwest Board of Regents.

Gov. Mike Parson appointed Tjeerdsma, a Republican from Maryville, to succeed Patrikc Harr, a Democrat from Maryville.

Tjeerdsma can serve immediately, though his appointment to the term scheduled to end on January first of 2025 must be confirmed by the Missouri Senate.

Tjeerdsma served as Athletics Director since 2013 before retiring last April. In his time as AD, NWMSU won four NCAA Division II national championships, 11 MIAA regular season titles and six MIAA tournament titles.

Tjeerdsma’s real mark came as head football coach, turning NWMSU into the national football powerhouse it is today. Tjeerdsma held a 183-43 record as head Bearcat coach from 1994 to 2010, winning three national championship and 12 MIAA titles.
