Scott Douglas Unruh, 72, of Atchison, KS, passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at his home.

Scott was born February 1, 1953, in Montezuma, KS, the son of John B. and Corine (Porter) Unruh. He graduated from the University of Kansas with dual degrees in English and Journalism. A lifelong storyteller, Scott built a diverse and passionate career in multimedia, journalism, and the arts.

Scott was a movie and documentary producer, writer, and actor, contributing his creativity and voice to numerous projects over the years. He was also a published author and the proud owner of his own newspaper, where his deep love for writing and truth seeking found its fullest expression. His commitment to meaningful storytelling reflected his belief in shining light on the overlooked, the vulnerable, and the important issues of the world.

A dedicated advocate, Scott championed human and animal rights, lending his voice, time, and heart to causes that mattered deeply to him. Animals—especially dogs—held a special place in his life. Rarely seen without a canine companion by his side, Scott found joy, comfort, and an unspoken connection in the pets that walked life’s journey with him.

Above all, Scott loved his family. His devotion to those he held dear was steadfast, and he took immense pride in his children and grandchildren, cherishing every moment with them.

Scott married Kathleen Mountz on December 22, 2022; she survives the home. He is also survived by his son, Wells (Erin) Unruh of Lawrence, KS; his sister, Debra (Bill) Wall of Montezuma, KS; four grandchildren, Osiris, Arianna, Bodhi, and Maya; and a daughter in law, Jenni Unruh. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Quinton Unruh, and a brother, Greg Unruh.

Scott’s passion, creativity, compassion, and unwavering love for both people and animals will be remembered by all who knew him.

The family has selected cremation care under the direction of the Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home, and no formal services are planned. Donations can be sent to his most cherished memorial of his son Quinton Unruh, the Quinton Unruh Memorial Grant and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
