The Missouri Western football team claimed two out of three MIAA Player of the Week awards this week.
Missouri Western cornerback TreVon Holmes was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week, while place kicker Cody Watson got the Special Teams Player of the Week nod.
Holmes led the Griffon defense in a 34-31 upset win over then 11th-ranked Emporia State at Spratt Stadium this past Saturday.
Holmes recorded a game and career-high 11 tackles. He also sealed the win with an interception as time expired. Holmes is the first player to intercept Emporia State quarterback Braden Gleason this season.
This marks back-to-back weeks that Missouri Western has claimed the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week award. Brayden Wright earned it last week.
Watson, meanwhile, nailed a season-long 41-yard field goal in the final eight seconds of the game to ultimately secure the victory. Watson accounted for 10 total points in the win, going 2-for-2 on field goals and 4-for-4 on point-afters.
Watson is 26-for-26 on point-after tries this season. He's made more PATs than any kicker in the MIAA so far this season.
Missouri Western (4-1), who is ranked #24 in the D2Football.com media poll this week, goes on the road Saturday to face Washburn (1-4). Kickoff from Yager Stadium in Topeka is set for 3 p.m.
The game will be carried on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3) with coverage starting at 2 p.m.
