USDA has confirmed Arizona's first case of New World screwworm, raising additional concerns about the parasite's spread into American livestock populations. Federal officials say laboratory testing confirmed the parasite in a dog in Cochise County, near the Mexican border. Arizona becomes the third state to report an animal infection, following cases in Texas and New Mexico. Authorities have established an infested zone extending approximately twelve miles around the detection site.
