A popular local program will help those suffering from the loss of a loved one travel through their grief journey
The fall sessions of Griefshare begins on Thursday at Brookdale Presbyterian Church. The 13-week program will be held every Thursday, with two hour classes, sessions beginning at 10am and at 6pm.
Coordinator Ryan Byous says the group helps bring people together who are all going through the same thing, providing a big support group for each other.
"One of the biggest obstacles that I think we face, especially as we experience a loss, is we feel like one, that we are unique in a sense that nobody knows how we're feeling or what we're going through, and two sometimes we get in our own head, and isolation can be the biggest enemy," Byous says on the KFEQmunnity show. "And so, the Griefshare program really allivieates both of those fears."
The program is designed for anyone who has lost a loved one or someone close to them, which Byous says is a majority of the time a person's spouse. With that, the program covers a variety of topics to help people through their grief.
"Typically, when you think about grief, some of the key words that come to mind are disbelief, anger, sadness, loneliness, fear, all of those are particular standalone topics that we'll talk about in each of the weeks as they follow through," Byous explains. "Another important that we talk about, and sometimes that we really neglect, is our own personal care."
Classes can be joined at any time through the 13-week program if you are not ready to join right at the beginning. You can enroll by contacting Brookdale Presbyterian Church for more information, or by going online to Griefshare.org and searching for the Brookdale program.
