Flash flooding, not flooding from the Missouri River, is causing the problems south of St. Joseph.

U.S. Route 59 remains closed from south St. Joseph to Rushville as floodwaters remain over the highway. The Missouri Department of Transportation reports Route 59 remains closed between Missouri Route 752 in south St. Joseph to Missouri Route 116 at Rushville. Water levels are not dropping at this time.

MoDOT says the roadway will remain closed until it is safe for motorists.

Route 59 at the Missouri River bridge to Atchison, Kansas is open for traffic.

MoDOT cautions motorists against attempting to drive through flooded roadways, pointing out that it takes just a few inches of water to force a vehicle off the roadway. Also, pavement damage can be hidden by floodwaters.

The Missouri River level is just above 13 feet at St. Joseph, well below the official flood stage of 17 feet.
