Lafayette head football coach Eric McDowell announced Friday that he will be stepping down after 12 years with the Irish football program.

McDowell, who spent the last three seasons as head coach, announced the news in a Twitter statement.

"Thank you Northside community for the last 12 years," he wrote. "My family and I feel so blessed to have been able to be a part of so many amazing families and successes."

McDowell didn't say what his next position would be and where, but he sent his best wishes to current and former players.

"Thank you for all of your support through the years," he continued. "We will take with us some great memories and will always have Irish green in our hearts."

McDowell, a former football player at Missouri Western, was named the head coach before the start of the 2018 season.

The Irish went 16-14 in McDowell's three seasons, including a 7-3 record in 2018. Lafayette was 5-5 in '19 and 4-6 in 2020.

The Irish beat Savannah last fall for their first district title since 2017.
