Norma Foster, 90, a lifelong resident of Platte County, MO passed away, September 16, 2025.
She was born on April 14, 1935 to Lyle and Rachel (Hughes) Babcock in Platte County. She graduated from Platte City High School. Norma graduated from the University of Missouri with a master’s degree in education. She taught English at North Platte High School in Dearborn, MO for five years before traveling to schools in St. Joseph helping students with speech therapy.
Norma joined the Platte Purchase Chapter of DAR in 1960. In 1963 she was named Outstanding Junior Member and in 1968 was named Outstanding Member. She enjoyed serving the chapter as Song Leader, Secretary, and Regent. Norma attended the State Conference in Jefferson City and many DAR memorial events throughout the state. She also served on the Platte County Historical Society, the Christian Women’s Fellowship, Study Club, Carriage and Driving Society of Greater Kansas City, Missouri Horse Shows Association, and the Pony Express Horse Shows Association.
Along with her daughter Priscilla, she took great pleasure in showing her Tennessee Walking Horses in shows across Missouri. They also rode in parades wearing authentic 1890’s side saddle attire. Keeping history alive Norma and Priscilla joined the National Pony Express Association to participate in the annual re-enactment of carrying the mail from St. Joseph, MO to Sacramento, CA. The Missouri members take turns carrying the mail to Elwood, KS to exchange with the Kansas riders. In 1996 the Summer Olympics came to Atlanta, GA. The Olympic torch relay travelled across America ending in Atlanta for the start of the games. Each member of the National Pony Express Association got to carry the torch on horseback over part of the original Pony Express trail through Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. Norma and Priscilla exchanged the torch on horseback as they rode through part of Kansas on the way to St. Joseph, MO.
Norma is survived by her daughter, Priscilla Foster, Columbia, MO; son, Brett (Karen) Foster, Dearborn, MO; grandchildren, Christina Perry, Steven (Bridgett) Perry; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Lyla Bridges; nephew, Greg Bridges; other relatives and many friends.
