A four-year-old struck and severely injured in a hit-and-run last week has died.
The identity of the child has not been released by authorities.
Buchanan County Prosecutor Ron Holliday charged 32-year-old Suani Karsom of St. Joseph with leaving the scene of an accident last week. Prosecutors are considering upgrading the charge.
St. Joseph police accuse Karsom of hitting the four-year-old Thursday night with her sport utility vehicle in the 800 block of North 10th Street and then leaving the scene. Police say video footage shows the vehicle driving north of 10th street when the child walked in front of the SUV. Officers arrested Karsom later that evening at 1216 North 9th Street. Police say Karsom confessed both to hitting the child and leaving the scene. Police say Karsom did not have a valid driver’s license.
Emergency crews rushed the child to the Mosaic Life Care hospital in St. Joseph with serious injuries and then the child was flown to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.
