St. Joseph officials reported some streets were closed in the area of Alabama St., Parker Road, King Hill and 59 Highway due to water over the roadways.

The Missouri Department of Transportation also reports U.S. Route 59 from the south city limits of St. Joseph to Route 116 at Rushville is closed.

St. Joseph Police Sgt. Tracy Barton says officers were in the area Monday morning warning residents of flooding.

“The officers felt that some people could be in danger due to how quickly some of the water was rising, so they took quick action and made contact with as many people as possible and suggested that they prepare to leave the area in case the water did get higher,” Barton says.

St. Joseph Communications and Public Relations Manager Mary Robertson says initial estimates show about 40 to 100 homes affected by rain overnight and Monday morning causing flooding.

Robertson says temporary sheltering has been set up and as of Monday afternoon, there were 19 people, three cats and a dog at the Civic Arena. The Red Cross is assisting with the temporary sheltering.
