ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Aspiring gardeners can soon expand their knowledge through the University of Missouri Extension Master Gardener (EMG) training program, offered at two locations along the U.S. 36 corridor this spring.

The sessions, running March 4 through April 17, will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays at two locations:

  1. Noon to 2:30 p.m. at the MU Extension office in Buchanan County, St. Joseph
  2. 6 to 8:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Cameron

The Extension Master Gardener program, established in Missouri in 1983, provides in-depth horticultural training for those looking to share their expertise with their communities. Participants will learn about soil health, plant nutrition, vegetables, fruits, ornamental and herbaceous plants, propagation, pest management, and environmental stewardship.

EMG volunteers support MU Extension by sharing research-based gardening information, answering questions, teaching through demonstration gardens, donating produce, and serving as community speakers. To earn certification, participants must complete 36 hours of training and contribute 30 hours of volunteer service.

Registration deadlines:

  1. Cameron session: Register here by March 4
  2. St. Joseph session: Register here by March 4
