Competition could be key to proposed railroad merger

Competition could become a major issue as federal regulators consider the proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. The Surface Transportation Board is reviewing additional information submitted by the railroads after requesting more details about the proposed combination. Federal rules require major railroad mergers to demonstrate that benefits involving service, safety, competition and economic efficiency outweigh potential anticompetitive effects and disruptions.
