Helen was born at Horton, October 27, 1930, one of five children born to Sylvester and Florence Curtis Halstead and has lived in the northeast Kansas area all of her life.  She attended Green Valley county school in the Baker Community prior to attending Horton High School. Helen enjoyed working and had various occupations though the years, many of which she did while raising a family.  She worked at the Egg Plant in Hiawatha, Grab A Snack in Morrill where she always enjoyed her coconut pie and always had a piece put back.  But if they needed it to sell, they asked this piece was available and of course he would say yes—if you really need it.  But at times, she said NO!  Helen also worked at the Midway Café and Pizza Hut, both of Sabetha, and housekeeping/laundry department for the Sabetha Manor.  Probably the job and she wouldn’t call it a job, was babysitting, oh did she enjoy that!

She was a member of the Baptist Church at Morrill and had attended the United Church of Christ in Fairview. Helen was known to be very personable, great sense of humor with a quick wit.  If you gave her the ‘business’, be prepared, she would give it back!

She married Lawrence Hartley, September 10, 1947, at Hiawatha.  They lived most of their married life in Morrill.  He died May 21, 2006.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, siblings Kenneth, Donald, Dorothy Halstead, infant daughter Sandra, daughter in law Paula Hartley, son in law Phil Bestwick, grand-daughter Melinda Long Burton, step-sons: Ivan Hartley, and Melvin Leon Hartley

Survivors include her children: Sharon Bestwick of Fairview, Betty Clements (Carl) of Kansas City, KS, Gary Hartley (Sandy) of Morrill, Roy Hartley of Hiawatha, Bob Hartley (Peggy) of Branson, and Randy Hartley of Fairview, a sister Ethel Allen of Seneca, daughters-in-law Andrea Hartley, Linda Hartley, both of California, 26 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, with five great-great-grandchildren, and 2 due in November.
