Nina “Fern” Goodlet Thompson, 90, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at the North Care Hospice House in North K.C., MO. Fern was born on August 5, 1934, in Weston, MO to Gilbert A. and Louise (Humes) Goodlet. Fern married William Isaac Thompson on March 28, 1953. She worked for many years for the U.S. Army at Fort Leavenworth, KS, starting her career as Administrative Clerk at the Combined Arms Center. Later, Fern worked for the Combined Arms Combat Developments Activity as Mail Distribution Clerk, Top Secret Mail Distribution Center, Top Secret Control Officer, Travel Supervisor, and Budget Analys.t. Finally, while working for the U.S. Space Institute, Fern was serving as Program/Budget Analyst when ASI was moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, at which time she retired at the age of 56.
Fern enjoyed making porcelain dolls, crafting, fishing, bowling, and playing poker. She worked as an EMT for the Weston Help Inc. ambulance service; and was a member of the local Eastern Star Chapter, First Baptist Church of Weston, and the Wegener’s Granulomatosis Support Group.
Fern was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her sister Helen (Goodlet) and husband Francis Larison.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Lee Thompson (Jeff Bash), grandson Gabe Lee (Tracy) Smither, 2 great grandchildren Brock William Smither, and Lexie Marie Smither; numerous nieces and nephews; and her “#2 daughter” Karla Weigman.
