Two houses, one vacant, received minor damage during the grass fire at Sugar Lake that spread quickly due to high winds on Thursday afternoon.

No one was harmed in the fire.

The Southwest Buchanan County Fire Department with help from neighboring fire departments fought the fire from early in the afternoon into the early evening before containing it. The department returned to the fire twice overnight to deal with flare-ups and hot spots.

As the fire spread, officials first warned drivers to stay away from Route 45 Highway and Route 59 before closing portions of the highways for a while. High winds spread the fire from southern Buchanan County into northern Platte County.

The cause is under investigation.
