The Pony Express Museum is set to launch a new program 10 years in the making during another Circle the Wagon event this Saturday, with free admission to the museum.
On Saturday, a ribbon cutting will be held to launch the museum's new "Explore, Discover, Learn" program for preschool age children, providing a book to help guide parents and their young children through the museum, providing a new way to learn about some of the exhibits within the Pony Express Museum.
Director Cindy Daffron says the book was developed to provide a new way to educate the next generation, utilizing QR codes so parents can get information right on their phones.
"The idea was let's bring the parents in with their kids and go through what we think, we changed this thing three times because they look at things at a lower level than we the adults, and it was just really fun to bring them in," Daffron says on the KFEQmunnity show. "And when I said one of them was, can you find the hammer, you know what they said? What is a hammer. So going through with them you really get a different perspective on things, but then you get excited because they're like ok go to next."
On the front of the book provided to students will be a QR code, which parents will be able to scan for exhibits. A voice over will then teach and talk to kids about the exhibit through the phone, before allowing parents to do the remainder of the teaching in their own way. Daffron knows, after years of development, this is something children will enjoy.
"The next generation if we don't tell them now, they won't know what the Pony Express is, we've got to help get there," Daffron explains. "So, I'm happy because it's a done deal."
A ribbon cutting will be held to kick off the event. Also, during the day, families will receive five different colored ribbons to take home, which can be made into bookmarks. There will also be refreshments at the museum of cookies and lemonade. Also on the day, there will be family fun at the Pony Bar & Goetz Museum. The Pony Bar will feature games, music, and a light lunch as well.
The Pony Express Museum will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Events at the Pony Bar and Goetz Musuem will run from 10am to 2pm.
