It’s Tax Day. After moving the tax filing deadline from April 15th to today May 17th, it has finally arrived.

IRS spokesperson Michael Devine says the COVID pandemic has slowed down the IRS when processing paperwork.

“Processing mail, tax returns, payments, refunds, correspondents is just taking much longer,” Devine tells St. Joseph Post. “We are now opening and processing correspondence as it arrives but it’s still taking longer.”

Devine says filing your tax return by the end of the day today will allow you to avoid the failure to file penalty.

“That’s ten times larger than the failure to pay penalties so it’s better to file your tax return even if you can’t pay everything you owe and then let the IRS give you all the options that you have so that you can pay that tax bill,” says Devine.

Devine encourages everyone to file their tax return by the end of the day.

“The job is getting done and the important part is as more things are put on us you know filing season and issuing the economic impact payments, we’re doing that just as quickly as we can as accurately as possible.”

To file tax returns you must file by midnight tonight.
