Monty Duane Wyss was born August 15, 1946, in El Dorado, KS and died on July 7, 2025, in Albuquerque, NM where he lived with his wife and son.
Monty was a 1964 graduate of Onaga High School and married Rose Marie Whitescarver on June 10, 1967. He worked 6 summers building bridges to put himself through college. Monty graduated from Emporia State Teacher’s College in 1968. He taught chemistry and physics in Sabetha, Kansas for 6 years. He moved to Alaska in 1974 where he found his life’s calling in Christian education. While there, Monty worked as a teacher, banker, fur buyer, accountant for Santa Claus, and administrator for a private Christian school where he also served as assistant pastor. After leaving Alaska in 1987, Monty went to school at the Institute of Creation Science in California where he finished a master’s degree in science education. He lived in Tucson, AZ for 6 years and was a teacher and administrator at Tucson Christian School. In 1994 the family moved to Albuquerque, NM where he earned a master’s degree in Christian counseling. He lived in Albuquerque for 15 years and worked as a banker, pastor, teacher at Hope Christian School, and Christian school administrator at Temple Baptist Academy. He retired in 2009 and moved back home to Onaga, Kansas. Monty and Rose Marie returned to Albuquerque to live with their son in April 2024.
Monty is survived by his wife Rose Marie, children, Wade (Eleanor) Wyss, Niccole (Craig) Brown, Twila (Dan) Sandblom, Dana Wyss and Eolande Wyss, 14 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, three brothers, KC (Jean) Corcoran, James (Jodi) Wyss and Gary (Marilyn) Wyss, and sister, Carla (Ray) Hickman, as well as many nephews and nieces.
Monty is preceeded in death by his father Robert Wyss, mother Mary Elisabeth Wyss, step-mother Hazel Wyss, brothers, Ricky Wyss and LJ Corcoran, sisters, Linda (John) Harris and Rita (Art) Hay.
Monty was born again at an early age and believed in Jesus Christ as his Savior. Monty was never perfect, but he trusted in the God who is. Those of us who knew Monty when he was young were amazed by what he accomplished. On July 7, 2025, Monty passed from death into life hoping to hear the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things. I will make you ruler over many things: enter into the joy of thy Lord.”
Memorial Services will be held at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga on Saturday, October 4th, at 10:00 a.m. Private burial will be later in the Coal Creek Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Onaga Senior Center, in care of the funeral home, PO Box 312, Onaga, KS 66521.
