The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a rolling domestic situation at 11:51 Thursday, in the area of Missouri Route 45 and U.S. 59, about three miles south of Rushville, and four east of Atchison, KS.
Dispatch reported to deputies en route that the call was from a female, who used the word "kidnapping" and that she was in fear for her life.
Upon their arrival, they found a red Dodge Ram pickup, and a Marcus Alan Caldwell, 36, black male from Kansas City, Kansas, as well as a woman later identified as his mother.
Mr. Caldwell appeared to be highly agitated, and behaving erratically. He was continuing to escalate the situation, including towards his mother.
Deputies attempted to talk with Caldwell, to de-escalate the situation. While attempting to handcuff him, Caldwell punched a deputy in the face, and began fighting and assaulting the deputies on scene. During the fight, Caldwell grabbed a deputy's gun, and tried to remove it from its holster. Deputies were able to subdue him, on the ground, under control, and handcuffed.
Deputies then sat him up and began assessing his condition, including putting water on his neck to calm him down, with Buchanan County EMS arriving at that time.
Caldwell then appeared to suffer a medical event, and stopped breathing. Deputies and EMS began life-saving measures, including CPR and chest compressions.
Caldwell was transported to Mosaic Life Care, where lifesaving measures continued, but he died at 1:47 PM.
The investigation is ongoing, with an autopsy scheduled for Friday, May 29th.
