Louanna Sanders Grier was born on October 16, 1929 in Atchison, Kansas. This is where she was raised with three sisters and one brother, she being the last left of her siblings. She went to school in Atchison at Lincoln and The Mount. She met and married Charles McKinley Grier from Hiawatha on November 12, 1948 when she was 18. They first lived in Atchison and then moved to Hiawatha where they resided the rest of their married life. From this union 9 children were brought into this world. Tanya, Dion, Roberta, Malcolm, Rhonda, Barry, Alta, Danny (Guyon), and Ethan. She spent her life loving and taking care of others. She was a loving wife and mother and took care of her husband Charles until he passed in November of 1996. They were married for 48 years. Many people graced her table and were treated with her home cooked meals, maybe some advice and definitely love. She loved the Lord and Savior and spent many a morning praying and reading scripture. She also loved her church and church family. She always said, “If the Good Lord Willing...” and she meant it. God was always put first in her life and it showed. She loved gardening (if there weren’t snakes) with her weapon of choice in hand—a hoe, her flowers, the gazebo, cooking, reading her bible, visiting with her family, playing her organ, and above all she loved to laugh. Her laugh was so infectious that you always wanted to hear it again and again. Her family will miss the traditional Thanksgiving Dinners, her side eye glances when she was getting ready to laugh at something you did, her words of wisdom, her open arms when she knew something was wrong, and her just being, Mom, Luke, Gram, Aunt Louanna, or Mrs. Grier.
She will be extremely missed by all of her family as she touched so many lives daily. She passed from this life just as sweetly as she was in it with her family at her side on Monday evening November 23. She passed knowing she was loved by her 9 children, 59 grandchildren, and 67 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She leaves a legacy, a legacy to love God and to not let your head be harder than your bottom. She will live on through every one of us that she loved dearly.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Louanna Grier Memorial Fund to be designated later by the family, sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., 66434.
