ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting and have a teen suspect in custody.
Just before 7:30p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a shots fired call in the 400 block North 5th Street in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.
Officers found a 17-year-old boy at the scene with a gunshot wound. EMS transported the teen to a hospital.
It was determined that the shooting suspect had fled the area on foot, according to Wilson.
At 8:15p.m., officers located the 16-year-old suspect at a residence. He was taken into custody on requested charges of aggravated battery, criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, and criminal use of a weapon. He was later transported to a juvenile detention facility.
According to investigators, both the victim and the suspect were on walking in the area of 5th and Parallel in Atchison. They were not walking together but a verbal altercation occurred as they were in the 400 block North 5th, according to Wilson. The suspect then shot the victim one time with a handgun.
Police recovered a handgun has been recovered during their investigation, according to Wilson.
Wilson did not release an update on the condition of the 17-year-old.
