Northwest overcomes in win over Lincoln

The #2 Northwest Missouri State Bearcats overcame four turnovers and saw junior Quarterback Mike Hohensee record the first 300 yard game of his career in their 58-20 win over Lincoln on Saturday.

Hohensee was 21 of 24 through the air for 312 yards and three touchdowns.  The Northwest offense also saw two receivers junior Keegan Sturdy (7/137/1) and junior Trevon Alexander (6/126/1) record their first 100 yard receiving games of their collegiate career.

Junior Robert Rawie led the Bearcat rushing attack with 95 yards, all but three of those coming in the fourth quarter as Northwest did not attempt a pass in the final frame with a 37-13 lead.

Lincoln drew first blood in the contest but it was all Northwest from there as the Bearcats scored 30 unanswered points to end the first half.  Lincoln started the second half with the first score but would not score again until 1:29 left in the game.

The Bearcats are now 2-0 on the season and will host Central Missouri this week with kickoff at 1:30pm.  It will be Family Weekend at  Bearcat Stadium.

The Ravens finished the game 4 of 5 on their trips to the red zone en route to a 31-7 win over the Bobcats.  The Ravens shutout the Bobcats in the second half on way to the win.

It was a balanced offensive attack for the Ravens as senior Garrett Kettle passed for 237 yards  and two touchdowns going 14-27, while senior Rayshon Mills ran 13 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns.

Tigers throttled by Wildcats in Manhattan

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns, the Kansas State defense picked off Missouri on four straight possessions in the second half, and the Wildcats blew out the Tigers 40-12.

It was the first meeting of old Big 12 rivals in more than a decade.

Adrian Martinez added 101 yards passing while running for a touchdown, and Phillip Brooks returned a punt 76 yards for another score, as the Wildcats weathered a long lightning delay to finish off a dominant performance.

Brady Cook was 15 of 27 for 128 yards for the Tigers.

Missouri will matchup next with Abilene Christian on Saturday with kickoff at 11am.  The Wildcats will kickoff at 2pm Saturday against Tulane

Jayhawks off to impressive start

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Jalon Daniels threw one of his three touchdown passes in overtime and Jacobee Bryant returned an interception for a score on the final play as Kansas beat West Virginia 55-42 in their Big 12 opener Saturday.

Kansas has won its first two games of the season for the first time since 2011.

West Virginia rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. After Daniels found Quentin Skinner with a 3-yard scoring pass in overtime, Bryant stepped in front of JT Daniels’ pass intended for West Virginia’s Bryce Ford-Wheaton.

The Mountaineers have lost their first two games for the first time since 1979.

Kansas will return to non-conference play on Saturday traveling to Houston for a matchup with the Cougars.  Kickoff is at 3pm

Cornhuskers fall to Georgia Southern, fire head coach Scott Frost

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Kyle Vantrease scored on an 8-yard run with 36 seconds left after Nebraska had taken its first lead, and Georgia Southern beat the three-touchdown-favorite Cornhuskers 45-42.

The Huskers’ Timmy Bleekrode was wide left with a 52-yard field goal attempt as time ran out and Georgia Southern players ran onto the field to celebrate the program’s first win in 13 games against Power Five opponents.

Following the loss Nebraska has fired football coach Scott Frost after a 1-2 start to the season. The situation was so dire that athletic director Trev Alberts made the move only three weeks before Frost's contract buyout would have been cut in half.

Associate head coach Mickey Joseph was named interim coach for the rest of the season. Frost's buyout was scheduled to drop from $15 million to $7.5 million on Oct. 1. There was no immediate word of a negotiated settlement.

The Cornhuskers will stay home for a third straight game as they welcome the Oklahoma Sooners to Lincoln.  Kickoff is at 11am.
