Betty J. Cooksey, 90, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, February 16, 2026.

She was born February 17, 1935 to Harold D. and Thelma (Tompkins) Dougan in St. Joseph, Missouri.

On August 1, 1954, Betty married the love of her life, Gerald Dale Cooksey. They were married for 69 years before his passing in 2023.

For 35 years, she shaped young minds as a beloved teacher within John Glenn Elementary School and Savannah School District.

Betty was a member of the Church of Christ, living out her beliefs through service and community engagement. Her involvement with the Lake Viking Lions Club also showcased her commitment to civic duty and charitable works.

One of Betty's greatest joys was quilting, a hobby that allowed her to express her creativity while producing beautiful works of art.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; sisters, Etta Mae and Kerlin Langley.

Survivors include her children, Janet Lofton (Lamont), Darrell Cooksey (Gemma), David Cooksey (Patti), and Jean Shaw; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; sisters, Susie Straugh and Ruth Bailey.

Farewell Services and Public Livestream 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 21, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. but Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Friday, February 20, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Lions Club.
