Amanda Smith, 46, Atchison, Kansas, died Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
Amanda was born October 17, 1978, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Neal Smith, Sr. and LeAnn (Kaup) Smith. She graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School and attended Avila University obtaining a Bachelor’s degree. Amanda then earned her master’s degree in social work from the University of Kansas. Following college completion, Amanda worked as a clinical social worker at The Guidance Center in Leavenworth, KS. She later worked in Emergency Services at New Directions Behavioral Health, Kansas City MO. After moving to Atchison, she had a variety of jobs in the area.
Amanda loved the Denver Broncos and, just like her Dad, loved to hate the Kansas City Chiefs. One of her greatest joys was connecting with her Smith cousins. She loved her dogs of several years, Felony and Rocko, a rescue. She cared for feral cats in her Leavenworth neighborhood, giving them food and warmth in winter. Amanda enjoyed the goats and didn't mind clearing the brush, schlepping firewood or picking green beans to help out on the family farm. She could fry up a mighty tasty pork chop but would tell you she hated to cook. She made friends easily and laughed often.
Survived by her mother, LeAnn Smith Karbaumer of Platte City; brother Damien (Tammy Witschger), Aptos CA; adopted brother Justin Williams, Kansas City MO; stepbrother Benjamin Karbaumer, Kansas City MO; stepsister Rebecca Karbaumer, Bremen Germany; stepfather Klaus Karbaumer, Platte City MO. The kindness of Nate Seymore is recognized as he and Amanda looked out for each other. Her family honors the deep caring of Adam Regan and his love for Amanda.
Preceded in death by her father Neal Smith Sr; brothers Neal Jr. and Marcus; and cousins Clarence III, Christopher and Charlton. Amanda's North Star was her brother, Neal.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to KC Pet Project's Roadrunner Medical Fund to help with expenses for emergency care of incoming pets.
