Judith Elin “Judy” Jones, 88, formerly of Atchison, KS died on Tuesday, March 4th, 2025, at her apartment in McCrite Plaza at Briarcliff, Kansas City, MO.

Judy was born on January 11, 1937, in Bennington, KS, the daughter of Alvin and Emma (Friedricksen) Powell. She graduated from Bennington High School in 1955. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS in 1959. Judy worked as a registered nurse in Arkansas City Hospital, Arkansas City, KS from 1962-1964.  She served as the Director of Volunteers from 1969 to 1980, and the Director of Personnel & Public Relations from 1980 to 1990. Judy was the Vice President of Human Resources and Marketing from 1990 to 1999, serving the Atchison Hospital for over 25 years.  She was an active member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison where she served as Junior Warden and was the first woman Senior Warden. Judy served on many Boards including the United Way, as Publicity Chairwoman; Vice President of the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce; Board member for All Faith Counseling; President of the Kansas Directors of Volunteers Society; member of the Atchison Hospital Riverbend Board; member of the Valley Hope Board of Directors; member of the Kansas Hospital Association of Personnel Directors and Marketing Directors. Judy served on the National Board for St. Francis Academy in Salina, Kansas, and was the Chairperson for the St. Francis Academy Board in Atchison. As a resident at McCrite Plaza she served on the Resident Board and was instrumental in bringing Episcopal Church services to the skilled nursing facility.

She was married to Philip H. Jones on May 31, 1958, in Bennington, KS. He preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 2019. Judy and Phil enjoyed traveling around the world with friends and family. They especially loved to visit Mexico and Marco Island, FL. She was an avid tennis player and hosted many Joneses Memorial Day Tennis Tournaments which she and her partner won several times. Judy was very social and enjoyed entertaining and hosting parties with all her friends and family. She also enjoyed gardening and relaxing at her pool. She was a huge KU Fan – ROCK CHALK!!

Survivors include three daughters, Leslie (Tom) Gwynn, Thorton, CO, Allison McFerrin, Atchison and Laurie Jones-Tinklin, Mission, KS, a sister Deanna Stanley, Bennington, KS, two grandchildren Hunter Gwynn, and Elizabeth ‘Libby’ McFerrin. Her parents and husband Philip preceded her in death.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 am on Sat. May 3rd, 2025, at the Trinity Episcopal Church with Fr. Jon Hullinger, Rector officiating. Interment of cremated remains will follow in the Trinity Episcopal Church Garden. The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions are suggested to Mt. Vernon Cemetery Association, St. Francis Academy, or the Trinity Episcopal Church Garden Fund and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
